Waxing: What to Expect at Your Appointment

If you've never had a professional wax before - or it's been a while since your last one - it's completely normal to have questions. At Odyssey Spa, we welcome clients from across Hertfordshire, including Stevenage, Welwyn, and Knebworth, and one thing we hear again and again is: "What actually happens during a waxing appointment?"

This guide walks you through exactly what to expect, from booking to aftercare, so you can go into your appointment feeling confident and relaxed rather than nervous.

What to Expect at Your First Waxing Appointment

Your first wax doesn't need to be daunting. When you arrive at Odyssey Spa, your therapist will start with a quick consultation. They'll ask about your hair length, skin sensitivity, any allergies, and whether you've had any reactions to waxing or skincare products before. This helps us tailor the treatment to you.

You'll then be shown to a private, comfortable treatment room. Depending on the area being waxed, you may be asked to remove some clothing and will be given a towel or disposable covering for privacy and comfort. Your therapist will cleanse the area first to remove any oils, lotions, or sweat, ensuring the wax adheres properly to the hair rather than the skin.

The wax itself is then applied in the direction of hair growth using a spatula, and removed quickly against the grain once it has set. Most areas, such as eyebrows, underarms, or legs,  take just a few minutes, while larger areas like a full leg or a Brazilian wax may take 20 to 40 minutes. Throughout the treatment, your therapist will check in with you and adjust their technique if needed. Waxing appointments at Odyssey Spa are relaxed, professional, and judgement-free, whatever area you're having treated.

How Painful Is Waxing on a Scale of 1 to 10?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends. Pain tolerance varies enormously from person to person, and it also depends on the area being waxed and how experienced your therapist is.

As a general guide, most clients rate waxing somewhere between 3 and 6 out of 10. Areas with thinner skin and more nerve endings, such as the underarms, upper lip, or bikini area, tend to feel more sensitive, while legs and arms are usually much more tolerable. First-time waxes often feel slightly more uncomfortable than subsequent visits, simply because the hair hasn't yet been trained to grow finer and sparser through regular waxing.

A skilled therapist, like those at Odyssey Spa, can make a significant difference to your comfort level by using the correct technique, holding the skin taut, and working efficiently. Discomfort is usually brief - a quick pull rather than prolonged pain - and fades within a few minutes.

What Should You Not Do Before a Wax Appointment?

Preparation makes a real difference to both comfort and results. Before your appointment, avoid the following:

  • Don't apply moisturiser, oil, or self-tan on the day of your wax. These can create a barrier that stops the wax from gripping the hair properly.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol beforehand if you're particularly sensitive, as both can heighten skin sensitivity.

  • Don't shave in between waxes. Shaving disrupts the hair growth cycle and can make waxing less effective and more uncomfortable.

  • Avoid sun exposure or sunbeds for at least 24-48 hours before your appointment, as sun-exposed skin can be more reactive.

  • Don't exfoliate on the day itself, though gentle exfoliation two to three days prior can help prevent ingrown hairs.

It's also worth timing your appointment away from your menstrual cycle if possible, as skin tends to be more sensitive during this time.

Can You Be Too Hairy for a Brazilian Wax?

No - you can't be "too hairy" for a Brazilian wax, and there's no need to trim beforehand. In fact, hair that's too short can be harder to wax effectively, while very long hair can simply be trimmed by your therapist at the start of the appointment if needed.

The ideal hair length for waxing is around a quarter of an inch - roughly the length of a grain of rice - which usually means around two to three weeks of growth since your last shave or wax. If your hair is longer than this, that's absolutely fine too; your therapist will simply trim it first. There's no reason to feel self-conscious about hair length or growth at Odyssey Spa. Our therapists wax clients of all hair types and lengths every day, and our only goal is to make sure you leave smooth, comfortable, and happy with your results.

Aftercare: Keeping Your Skin Happy

After your wax, your skin may look slightly pink or feel tender for a short while - this is completely normal. Avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming pools, and intense exercise for 24 hours, as heat and sweat can irritate freshly waxed skin. Wear loose, breathable clothing where possible, and hold off on applying makeup or fragranced products to the treated area on the day of your appointment. From the next day, gentle exfoliation two to three times a week will help prevent ingrown hairs and keep your skin smooth between visits.
